Reading together is an opportunity to help children develop print awareness, story comprehension and language skills.
While reading a book with your child,
Point to the pictures on each page and some of of the words as you read them
Change your voice for the different characters and read with expression
If your child has questions, or wants to talk about the book, listen and respond.
After reading the book
Talk about what happened in the story with your child and ask if he or she enjoyed the book
Ask what he or she liked about the book
Once your child becomes familiar with the book, ask them to "read" it to you using the illustrations. This is called, picture reading. You may be suprised by how much your child remembers.
Making time on a regular basis to spend time together enjoying books with our children helps them to understand that reading books is fun and that their education is important.
